Blog #2: A Week of Cancellations and Mishaps
As you can guess from the title, this week wasn’t my week. It was bound to happen at some stage- sources and stories falling apart, it happens to us all. I had intended to do 3 pieces of content this week:
Podcast with Michelle Grimes on her new single and music career to date.
Print story on Aoife McNamara and her new store in Adare Village
News package: Limerick in Level 5: What do the people think?
The first didn’t work out because as it turns out, Nicky Anderson, head of the podcast team, has already planned to do a podcast herself with Michelle so it seems my idea was already taken. I don’t particularly mind as it wasn’t one of my most passionate ideas, I would just like to experiment with doing a podcast at some point and thought she would be an appropriate guest but I still have weeks to go until our deadline so there’s plenty of time to think of a new podcast idea!
The second story on Aoife McNamara is actually the only one out of the three mentioned that worked out! Originally I had really hoped to do a studio tour video package with Aoife in her new Adare studio but unfortunately, despite multiple attempts to contact her, I never got through. So I settled for the next best thing and just wrote a story on her instead. I used information from her website, Instagram and some other stories online in order to put it all together. I actually interviewed Aoife a few years ago when I was in first year for FAC Magazine. She had just graduated at the time and finished working for 6 months in Paris. It’s amazing now to see how much she has grown her business and name. I’m in awe of her talent.
Thirdly was a news package I hoped to do in Limerick city nabbing passer bys on the street for a quick quote on their opinions on the new level 5 restrictions. I also intended to go into Costa and Tesco and ask a worker in each the same question and Sharon from Glitzi Bitz agreed to give me a quote on having to shut her business. On returning to UL after my trip to town I was going to ask a student their opinion and then combine it all together to give an insight into the opinions of the people of Limerick on the new Level 5 restrictions.
However, unfortunately, it just didn’t work out. Sharon had to cancel and then there was torrential rain which made me think nobody would be outside so no potential interviewees and it would be difficult to shoot a piece to camera in the rain and also to record b-roll, so I decided to postpone it. I am hoping maybe next week I can succesfully record it.
Other then that, the week has been quite quiet. Next week I have agreed to do a feature video package with Zoha for her ‘Out and About’ series. it’s featuring an illustrator based in Limerick. i’m really looking forward to it as I love digital art and in particular, illustration. I think given the nature of illustration, it’ll provide lots of opportunity for good visuals. I also think there might be good potential for using my iPad and it’s fonts and other features. I plan on doing some brainstorming this weekend for filming and editing techniques we could use. Zoha also added me to a Word Doc on Google Drive where we can write ideas for questions to ask so I am gonna get a move on with that too!
