BLOG #5: BACK IN BLACK
Following the stress of Newsday, last week I decided to take a break from Limerick Voice and focus on assignments instead. But this week I’m back and just in time for Black Friday!
I usually don’t write the “Top 10” type stories so I thought for a change, I would give it a go and so I wrote “5 Limerick Businesses to support this Black Friday”. I noticed it wasn’t up yet so I ran it by the Business Editor, Maire who admitted apologetically, she had forgotten to post it but will post it for Christmas instead. I don’t mind at all, at least it’s written now and hopefully, in the meantime more businesses may reopen so I can add to my list and improve on it.
I also did my first press release story of the year. I mentioned back on Newsday, when I asked Limerick Against Pollution (LAP) for a comment on The Paris Agreement story, they sent me out a press release for an upcoming oral hearing between Mungret’s, Irish Cement and the EPA. The press release outlines how LAP expect further outrage from the people of Limerick in relation to the hearing being virtual and preventing accessibility for the public to use their right to being present and overseeing. I happily wrote this story as I fully support LAP and their views on the incineration of waste in Mungret.
It also made me realise how useful my work experience in I Love Limerick was as the amount of contacts and experience I gained from it still strongly stands to me today. The LAP representative I spoke with for this story, Claire Keating, remembered me from my previous work with her in I Love Limerick. Also, last week I was able to get in contact with Saoirse Exton from Fridays for Futures smoothly as I also met her numerous times whilst working at I Love Limerick. The experience of doing my co-operative work placement here has proved most beneficial as I have built a strong list of contacts.
Next week I have a podcast lined up with Kate Bourke which I am really looking forward to launching as I have not done a podcast yet. I hate the thoughts of speaking, I’m definitely more of a “print” person then broadcast but I want to try everything whilst I have the opportunity and Katie has been giving me some pointers.
